Steve here, the owner and physical therapist/certified wound care specialist behind Breakwall Wound Care and Rehab LLC. As someone who’s passionate about helping people heal faster and move better in the comfort of their own homes in Erie, PA and nearby counties, I want to share a bit more about myself beyond the clinic. Living and working in this beautiful corner of Pennsylvania means I get to enjoy some of my Erie, PA favorites that recharge me after long work weeks.
Erie (and the surrounding areas like Fairview, where our base is) has so much to offer – Lake Erie views, outdoor adventures, great food, and that classic small-city charm. Here are some of my favorite things that I love squeezing into my downtime.
Presque Isle State Park
Nothing beats heading to Presque Isle for a walk on the trail, a walk on the beach, or just sitting by the water. It’s Pennsylvania’s most visited state park, with miles of sandy beaches, trails, and our stunning Lake Erie sunsets. It’s a great way to unwind and clear my head. In summer, the beaches are unbeatable; in fall, the colors are beautiful. It’s a reminder of why I love serving this community—Erie’s natural beauty is right at our doorstep. Fun fact: I was a lifeguard at Presque Isle for 10 years!
Asbury Woods
When I need a nature fix away from the lake, Asbury Woods is my go-to. I love the serene boardwalk trails, spotting wildlife, and going to the creek. My family and I enjoy the exhibits, live animals, natural play area, and events at the Nature Center as well as the playground at the park. It’s such a peaceful spot to recharge, reflect, and appreciate the healing power of being in nature.
Exploring Local Breweries and Craft Beer Scene
Erie’s craft beer scene is thriving, and I’m a fan of grabbing a pint after a busy week. Spots like Black Monk Brewery, Lavery Brewing Co, Luminary Distilling and Altered State Distillery (not breweries but I enjoy them), John Russel Brewing Company, and Twisted Elk Brewery are favorites. Their outdoor patios (when the weather cooperates) make for great people-watching and relaxing. The Brewerie at Union Station is another gem with truly unique architecture. Pair the unique craft beers with some pub food, and it’s the ideal low-key evening.
Waldameer Park & Water World
For a dose of nostalgia, having fun, and building new memories, I genuinely enjoy going to Waldameer. My family and I get season passes every year! With over 100 rides and the water park, it’s great for blowing off steam. Some of my favorites are the Ravine Flyer II, the Comet, Steel Dragon, Chaos, X-Scream, Music Express, Rally Racer, the tube slides, and Rocket Blast. My family and I can’t wait to check out the new changes at Water World this summer!
Local Eats
Oh boy, where to start…Erie’s food scene keeps my taste buds happy! My family and I love supporting local – and our local food spots do not disappoint. As a man who loves to cook, I quite literally could ramble on and on about our local fare, but to keep this a reasonable length to actually read, I’m just going to list and link to some of my favorites (I have no doubt I will forget some, so don’t be surprised if this list gets longer..)
Wooden Ladle Ramen & Rice Bowl
Connie’s Ice Cream/Presque Isle Pizza
At the end of the day, our corner of PA isn’t just where I run Breakwall Wound Care and Rehab—it’s home. The community here is warm, resilient, and full of people who inspire me every time I step into their home to help with wound healing or mobility. Whether it’s the lake, the trails, or a cold brew on a patio, these local favorites keep me grounded and grateful.
